Dess dragningskraft märks ju även i tidvattnet.

English summary

Am I the only one fascinated by the moon?

Many superstitions about the moon has to do with fear. Werewolves showing up in full moon, witches depicted as a silhouette against the full moon when she takes off across the sky on her broom.

For me it is the opposite. I find comfort in the moon and its beauty. To see this body in space that reflects the sunlight down to us at night, as if the sun and the moon work together to always remind us that the light is always there, even in the darkest of nights. Like a beam of hope.

When the moon reflects the light of the rising and setting sun when the sky is still light it is like they change shifts. ”The night was alright, now you can take over Sun with your morning light!”. ”The day has been great, get on your duty Moon!”.

The moon’s power also shows itself in the lunar pull of the tide. Imagine that the moon affects our waters when our Earth moves closer or further away from the moon in its orbit. Isn’t it just fascinating???

Everything nature and universe do overwhelmes and enthralls me. To think that little me, a mere little nothing in the whole endless universe, still gets to be a part of it all. I wouldn’t be here without it. Neither would you!

  1. In a very urban area like here it’s not so easy to watch the sky. There are too many artificial lights around, too many buildings. But there was a time when I liked to make photos of the sky colours just before the sun set. Some times the sky was red, sometimes grey and blue. After some time I gave up making the photos, maybe because the camera didn’t get the colours very well. Nature can always be a source of inspiration. There are some people who dont need it, but I like to see trees, forests, lakes, the sea, mountains. Right now I’m reading a classic book about nature, Desert Solitarie, by Edward Abbey. There is a passage about the moon: ”Finally the moon came up, a golden globe behind the rocky fretwork of the horizon, a full and delicate moon that floated lightly as a leaf upon the dark slow current of the night. A face that watched me from the other side”. A marvelous entry!

    • Yes the camera can never truly replicate nature, nature is Perfect as it is and nothing can come close. But I like taking photos of the sky. In processing in Photoshop one can almost replicate the colours as you remember them at least, even if it is not exactly reality. And I love the processing part of photography because it takes me back to the moment I took the photo again. 🙂 Nature is THE source of inspiration for me. Nothing beats it. And it is better than any antidepressive medications in the world. What a lovely passage you quoted! Wow. I need to look that book up! Thanks for your comment! 🙂

      • You might like the book (subtitle: ”A season in wilderness”). But it’s not very easy to read as Abbey’s vocabulary is vast, he speaks about many things that are not part of our experience like plants and animals that exist there. It’s a poetic book that unsettles things (written in a different time as ours) and that means that some people also don’t appreciate it (I will resist telling more about the book now). It seems that there isn’t a Swedish translation and it seems to be out of stock in British amazon, but there is an edition that is available through American amazon or, more easily, you could certainly also find it (an edition in English) in a library in Sweden. As to the photos of the sun set that I made, I used a small camera and the results weren’t always very good, but your camera is very good and makes really good photos!
